RECENT PROJECTS:

Whilst the role of our section is varied a few of our more recent larger projects are outlined below, more will be added soon.

The core workload of the Engineering Services Team is connected to the built environment and encompasses a wide range of activities. They include the management of major capital schemes, design and construction services and the implementation of Environmental Improvement schemes. Examples include the road and environmental improvements on the Slyfield Industrial Estate to the award winning project environmental improvements at Stoke Fields.

There is also a substantial workload of minor works and maintenance for other Council Departments. The service maintains the Councils roads and footpaths under the 1994 New Roads and Streetworks Act responsibility. Services are provided to the Housing Department for disabled accesses and resident parking schemes. Services are also provided to the Leisure Department where recent maintenance works at Spectrum such as the earth slip and minor works such as the access ramp for the ice machine has been undertaken. Services to the Clerk and Solicitor range from minor repairs to Council infrastructure to the provision of a computerised mapping and a land surveying service. The section is used extensively in the resolution of boundary disputes for them. The Engineering Services Team also has the responsibility for the installation and maintenance of the Borough wide CCTV system.

Engineering Services also undertake the statutory Land Drainage function on behalf of the Council and manage the responsibilities for the sections of the river where the Council are the Riparian owner. The flooding during the winter months of 2000/1 has increased the demands put on this section. Whilst the direct flooding from the rivers was an issue numerous problems from other sources, such as run off from saturated farmlands, re-established springs, blocked sewers were dealt with. Some of the more major issues are still being studies on a multi-agency basis after the emergency relief measures were undertaken.

Apart from Land Drainage Engineering Services also undertakes other certain statutory duties on behalf of the Council. These are as follows:-

  • Monitoring and managing the Councils closed Landfill sites

  • Emergency planning for flood snow and landfill gas incidents

  • Street naming and numbering function

Resulting from the best value review the following changes and improvements are being progressed:-

  • The Engineers time recording system has been modified so that each stage of a project can be costed to enable direct comparison

  • Improved partnership working with the Environment Agency

  • The street naming process has been streamlined and proposals to introduce charging for some elements of the server are being considered

  • Our Maintenance and Minor Civil Engineering Contract is being rewritten
