Ockham
Road North Footpath Construction
Ockham
Road North is located in a rural location and for most of its length
didnt have a path alongside it, forcing pedestrians to walk in
the verge alongside fast moving traffic. Via the Chief Executive,
Engineering Services was asked by Ockham Parish Council to provide
a footpath to link with the existing footpaths in Ockham Lane and
the North West Sector of Ockham Road North, to improve pedestrian
safety and provide wheelchair access.

As
well as the footpath being constructed the GBC Clerk of Works worked
very closely with the Parish Council and the local residents to
ensure that disruption was kept to a minimum. The works involved
constructing a 330m long footpath, junction realignment, two crossing
points and adjusting some street furniture. Photograph three below
shows the problems faced when constructing a footpath so near to
existing vegetation and boundaries, but despite this a minimum width
of 900mm was maintained along its length to allow for wheelchair
access.

As
part of the works Surrey County Council had to install a culvert
and their works started immediately after our works finished in
January 2002 and were completed in March 2002 just in time for the
official opening on Saturday 30th March 2002 by the Mayor
and Chairman of Ockham Parish Council as shown in photograph four
below.
