Schools and the Environment

" The creativity, ideals and courage of the youth of the world should be mobilised to forge a global partnership in order to achieve sustainable development and ensure a better future for all."
Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, Principle 21.

In 1992 the United Nations Earth Summit at Rio de Janerio established that the only way to reconcile the need for future economic development with protection of the environment is through sustainable development.

Agenda 21 is the action plan agreed at the Rio Summit which highlights the importance of involving all sectors of the community in order to move successfully towards a more sustainable way of living.

Young people are crucial to Agenda 21. The commitment of local authorities in the UK to the Local Agenda 21 process means that consulting and involving young people should be a key element of all initiatives and strategies. The views and perceptions of young people are essential to understanding and meeting the needs of the community.

Education Programme

Guildford Borough Council is committed to Local Agenda 21. The GBC schools programme was launched in 1996 and has encouraged schools to take positive steps towards preserving their local environment. The Council's aim is to continue to work on a number of co-ordinated GBC initiatives relating to schools. These include an internal officers working group where all officers dealing with schools in the Borough can meet to discuss projects and schemes. A Schools Grants Scheme which allows schools to apply for funding to undertake environmental projects. 'Online' information to assist schools with project work and an Energy Matters programme.
