Schools litter competition winners 2002

The winners of the schools litter competition have recently been announced. Walsh Junior School, Westborough School and St Nicolas School won first, second and third prize respectively in the primary school category. Howard of Effingham came first in the secondary school category.

The competition was run by Guildford Borough council in association with ENCAMS (formerly the Tidy Britain Group).

Thirteen schools took part in the competition. All schools were visited by a cleansing inspector at the start and end of the competition. The inspectors recognised how well kept all the schools were and praised them for their effort.

Schools were also asked to submit posters as part of the competition. Annabel Sanders won the competition to design a poster to discourage littering and Harriet Rumsey won the secondary schools category for pupils to design a litter bin which would encourage people to use it.

In April 2001 Guildford Borough Council, in association with ENCAMS (formerly the Tidy Britain Group) launched an anti-litter campaign. As part of the campaign ten schools in the borough took part in a 'Litter Free Schools Competition'. These schools included, George Abbot, Shawfield County primary, Pirbright County Primary, St Nicolas' Infants, Wood Street County Primary, Walsh Memorial, Queen Eleanor's and Worplesdon County Primary School.

All ten schools were assessed at the start and end of the competition. The winners were chose according to the level of improvement they achieved. A presentation ceremony took place to award the winners with their prizes.
