ARTINGTON PARK AND RIDE

A temporary park and ride scheme had been operating at Peasmarsh for a number of years but has recently been replaced by a purpose built permanent car park. Construction started in August 2001, was substantially completed in March 2002 and formally opened by the Mayor of Guildford Mrs Jennifer Powell and the Chairman of Surrey County Council Dr Brian Coffin on April 4th 2002.

At the opening of the car park, former Chief Executive David Watts stated I should like to thank customers for their patience while the new car park has been built. I think everyone will agree that it is a far superior facility to the old car park at Peasmarsh and is an investment, which will benefit customers for many years to come. It is also a testimony to the strong partnership working of the County and Borough Councils and the contractor. This partnership approach has ensured that we have completed the project on time and to budget. It also demonstrates our commitment to easing traffic congestion in the town centre and providing more environmentally friendly alternatives to the car.

Guildford Borough Council and Surrey County Councils total investment in developing the site was 2.19 Million. The land is leased to Guildford Borough Council by the More Molyneux family of Loseley Park.

Project management of the scheme was done by G.B.C (Guildford Borough Council) Transportation, the detailed design for the park and ride was completed by G.B.C Engineering Services and the contractor was Geoffrey Osbourne Limited. The scheme comprises of 447 spaces and was carefully designed to limit its impact on the surrounding area. The Oak, which was the only tree on site, has been retained and incorporated into the design and the layout of the car park avoids straight lines of parking bays where possible as shown in photograph two.

All the surface water run-off passes through a petrol interceptor before the clean water goes into a newly created pond, where it is gradually released into the existing watercourse. Once the planting has been completed and matured, the outline of the car park will soften. It will then become part of the landscape without compromising its basic function and safety of the public.
Surrey County Council have also installed Real Time Passenger Information on the Artington Park and Ride route, these are electronic displays which gives the number of minutes to the departure of the next bus, between the new Park and Ride car park and Guildford town centre. One of these displays is in the Council office as shown in photograph three.

As part of the park and ride site a reception / toilet block is also currently being constructed as shown in photograph three.
