TOWN WHARF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT - RIVER BANK MAINTENANCE WORKS

UPDATE EIGHT - 16TH JULY 2002 (MAINTENANCE WORKS)

Progress Report: As work on phase one of the environmental improvement scheme is now nearly complete with the bins, bollards and lighting installed, work has now started on the maintenance works for the river bank to prevent further collapse. The old partially collapsed wall was removed using a long-reach excavator. A large tree stump was uncovered which proved difficult to remove. The new steel sheet piles, 4.5m to 5.0m long had to be driven into the river bed using an air hammer, leaving just 150mm above the water level. The void behind the steel piles has been filled with concrete ready for the new engineering brick wall to be built. Once the wall has been built, the area behind it will be backfilled and repaved to match the environmental improvement scheme.

Photograph ten taken 16th July showing steel piling and ducting for last uplighter.
As soon as these maintenance works are finished then the final surfacing and final uplighter will be installed and the works will be fully open to the public and their will be one final update on this webpage showing the final works in update no nine which is anticipated to be in late July / early August.
