TOWN
WHARF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT /
MAINTENANCE SCHEME (Updated 16th July 2002)
The
Town Wharf Environmental Improvement Scheme Phase One works are
located next to the River Wey in the centre of Guildford and include
repaving the area with 450 x 450mm slabs and granite cubes, construction
of a flight of 'sitting' steps and the installation of ducting and
architectural lighting, street furniture and the 'Bargeman' statue.
The cost of the scheme is 85,000 which includes very generous contributions
from the Guildford Society, Legal and General and National Trust.
The scheme is being jointly designed
and supervised between Engineering Services and Projects and Public
Realm. This page will focus on the construction of the csheme over
the next five to six weeks and subject to resources we hope to update
this page weekly with progress reports and photographs. After the
environmental improvement works are completed, part of the nearby
river bank is to be rebuilt as part of an on-going maintenance programme.

TOWN WHARF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT
- RIVER BANK MAINTENANCE WORKS
UPDATE EIGHT - 16TH JULY 2002
(MAINTENANCE WORKS)
Progress Report: As work on phase
one of the environmental improvement scheme is now nearly complete
with the bins, bollards and lighting installed, work has now started
on the maintenance works for the river bank to prevent further collapse.
The old partially collapsed wall was removed using a long-reach
excavator. A large tree stump was uncovered which proved difficult
to remove. The new steel sheet piles, 4.5m to 5.0m long had to be
driven into the river bed using an air hammer, leaving just 150mm
above the water level. The void behind the steel piles has been
filled with concrete ready for the new engineering brick wall to
be built. Once the wall has been built, the area behind it will
be backfilled and repaved to match the environmental improvement
scheme.
