CASTLE HILL - WALL PROTECTION WORKS
The wall at Castle Hill surrounding the Castle Grounds has been repeatedly hit over the years, the last time being September 2000. Further to a request from Projects and Conservation, Engineering Services produced a detailed design which not only gave protection to the wall, but was aesthetically pleasing in sympathy to the surrounding conservation area. Engineering Services then supervised the scheme ensuring it was done to budget, time and due its hazardous location had adequate traffic management.

The design that was agreed incorporated precast �safety� kerbs which are specifically designed to guide vehicles back onto the road by their profile and size. In addition these kerbs are substantially heavier than the standard kerb thereby providing additional protection against heavier vehicles. In the event that a heavy vehicle hit the kerbs, a compressible joint has been installed next to the wall to help further �cushion� any impact forces against the wall from these vehicles.

As well as the accident prevention measures we installed such as safety kerbing, extra signing and lining, as the scheme was within a conservation area the design incorporated granite setts to infill the area behind the kerbs.
