As well as carrying out routine health and safety inspections, officers provide practical advice to employers and employees and aim to raise health and safety standards in the borough. The frequency of inspections varies according to potential hazards and how well these are controlled. The team also investigate accidents at work as well as complaints about safety and welfare conditions. Advice is also available to employers, employees and the public. A visit from one of the environmental health team should be viewed as an opportunity. Officers aim to work with businesses, especially small or medium sized businesses, to advise and assist with compliance with the law. Special initiatives based on government targets and health promotion activities. are also undertaken. In 2001 the team ran a successful campaign on slips, trips and falls in catering. The campaign was designed to raise awareness of the hazard and to identify simple low cost control measures.
