Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Did you know that the UK produces enough rubbish every year to fill wheelie bins stretching all the way to the moon and the 13 billion steel cans used every year will take you to the moon THREE times!!

Use the tips below to help us reduce Guildford’s waste problem.  You will not only be helping the environment and wildlife, you will also be helping to protect human health.

Reduce

Try to reuse plastic shopping bags or use a long-life one. Try to say no if shops offer you a plastic bag.

Try to purchase products without excessive packaging. Show businesses you don’t want excessive packing by leaving it behind in the shop.

Try to purchase toiletries with refillable containers  - this will reduce waste. Body Shop have a good range.

Discourage people you know, particularly children,  from dropping litter as it is dangerous to the environment, wildlife and human health.

Reuse

Try to purchase products in refillable containers. Body Shop do a good range of toiletries in refillable containers.

Reusable Nappies are no longer like the old terry towelling nappies. You can now use nappies with biodegradable liners that can be flushed safely down the toilet. Reusable nappies save you money, protect the environment and are a safer option for you baby’s health. For further information call the Surrey Waste Advisory Team on 020 8541 9341

Ideas for Reuse:

v      Reuse your envelopes by re-sealing and sticking labels over the old address.

v      Jars, tubs and bottles can be reused as candle holders, screw boxes, jam jars…

v      Christmas cards can be re-used as gift tags for the following year and try to reuse your wrapping paper year after year.

v      Polystyrene padding can be torn up and used in the bottom of plant pots to help drain water away.

The list goes on! See what you can come up with! For more tips visit the recycling pages.

Recycle

Try using a Composter, Green Cone or Wormery to deal with your green and organic waste. Composters and Green Cones can reduce waste as well as improve the soil in your garden!

Most Guildford residents now have access to the Green Box Household collection Scheme so please ensure you use it.
