Air Quality

The Environmental Health Division has a number of responsibilities, with respect to air quality including:-

Air Quality Review and Assessment.
The Review and assessment of air quality under the Environment Act 1995 was completed in 2001.  Recently an updated screening and assessment has been carried out, this is being scrutinised by DEFRA.

Air Quality Monitoring.
Since 1990 monthly nitrogen dioxide levels have been monitored. The results, indicate that recognised standards, have not been exceeded but there are sites of concern in heavily trafficked areas.
The Borough has two Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Stations . These monitor particulates, Nitrogen Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide and meteorological conditions. Data is attached in the form of three monthly reports.

Education Initiatives.
An education package including a video "The Air Around us" has been produced in conjunction with other Surrey authorities.

Air Quality Strategy
An Air Quality Strategy has been published after a period of consultation during 2003.  The document which can be downloaded from this site sets out how Guildford should approach air quality from a strategic viewpoint.  The initiation is voluntary listing a number of initiatives which can be followed as a template for the future.
