Ripley Churchyard Resurfacing
The entrance to Ripley Churchyard whilst having historical value has become increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain over the years. In addition to this, access is a problem for the elderly and disabled visitors due to its cobbled construction. Following a request from the Church and after consultation with GBC Cemeteries and Crematorium, Engineering Services organised and supervised the removal of the existing cobbled footpath and the resurfacing with yorkstone paving. In conjunction with Ripley History Society we carefully removed and retained part of the cobbled path for future historical reference.
Although one of our smaller schemes, it presented a challenge to ensure that when the footpath was resurfaced that the new yorkstone laid matched that of the old to avoid a chequerboard effect. This problem was overcome by identifying a local supplier who had weathered yorkstone and by our contractor carefully mixing the existing and new slabs to give the impression that the new surfacing had been laid a long time ago, in keeping with the age of the church as shown below.
