Celebrating the traditions of the river and the 350th anniversary of the River Wey Navigation, the Borough Council has organised a number of activities, including some during National Architecture Week and at Hampton Court Flower Show. Buildings associated with the Navigation and other waterways in the Borough, will be featured during Architecture Week (20 - 29 June), when special free lunch time talks are held at the Brew House and Guildford Institute Guildford starting at 1pm.

Topics to be covered include Mills and bridges, settlements, monasteries and large houses along the Wey, The Chilworth Gunpowder industry, modern developments and structures associated with the Wey navigation. For further information please contact Guildford House Gallery on 01483 444742.

Recognising the impact of local architecture to everyone in the Borough, and the influence it has on our perceptions of Guildford as a pleasant place to live and work, a new category has been added to this year's Guildford Heritage and Environment Awards to find the public's favourite building.

The People's Favourite Award is up for grabs for the borough's most popular building, either old or new. You can vote now for any building within the borough boundary, click here for the form. The winning building will be announced at the annual awards ceremony in the Autumn. Entry forms will also be available during Architecture Week.

The Council has also teamed up with the National Trust, owners of the River Wey Navigation to create "The Lock-keepers Cottage" garden at this year's Hampton Court Flower Show, 8 to 13 July. This picturesque garden features a canal with real lock gates, a cottage garden and vegetable patch. The garden also uses the flowers and plants that normally thrive in a riverside setting. In keeping with the river theme, all the authentic and original materials for the gardens are being transported to the gates of Hampton Court Palace by barge and will be re-used after the show.
