Welcome to the 20001/02 edition of Guildford Borough Council's recycling directory. Every year each Guildford Borough household produces 700kg of waste.� We recycle on average about 10% of this waste, the rest goes to landfill which takes up space and produces gases which contribute towards global warming.� Often waste which is put into landfill can be recycled.

Recycling plays a major part in minimising the adverse impact of waste disposal practices. There are many ways of managing our waste more sustainably and reducing the contents of your dustbin.� The simplest way is to just remember the 3 R's REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE

REDUCE:�� Create less waste, use your purchasing power and choose wisely.

REUSE: �� As a consumer buying re-usable and refillable products can save you money.

RECYCLE: �� Recycling involves the processing of waste materials to produce a usable raw material or product.� This enables the same materials to be used more than once, so extending their life and maximising the value extracted from them.

In this edition you will find useful information which will enable you to help the Borough meet the Government's target of recycling 25% of household waste by the year 2005.�

Not all materials can be recycled at present, however this directory is provided to give you the opportunity to contribute to the Borough's recycling drive.

AEROSOLS
Unfortunately due to the danger of explosion, these cannot be recycled safely. Please dispose of these with your refuse.

ALUMINIUM FOIL
Please take this to Slyfield civic amenity site for recycling. You can find their details at the end of this directory.

ARCHITECTURAL SALVAGE
�Salvo� run an information exchange for householders and businesses to promote re-use and recycling of antique and reclaimed materials. They also have a list of forthcoming demolitions and carry out reclamation audits.� Please contact Hazel Matravers or Thornton Kay on (01890) 820333 or log on to their website on www.salvo.co.uk for more information.

ASBESTOS
Unfortunately this cannot be recycled but up to six sheets can be taken to the Slyfield civic amenity site for safe disposal.� Please report to a member of staff on arrival. You can find their details at the end of this directory.

BABY ITEMS
You may find specialist shops in the Yellow pages which accept second hand children�s goods. Play groups, nursery groups and doctors� surgeries also welcome toys.�

Sainsbury�s will give you a penny back for every carrier bag you reuse in their store.� Tesco�s will replace their large 10p bags when they can no longer be used and will recycle the old ones. See below for sites.�

BATTERIES (household)
At present these cannot be recycled, please dispose of these with your refuse or use re-chargeable batteries. The Rechargeable Alkaline Manganese (RAM) batteries are the best. These can be obtained from B & Q.� Alternatively, Nickel Metal Hydride (NIMH) are good but only 1.2 not 1.5 volt. For your nearest B&Q store, please phone 0800 444840.

Take your books to the Oxfam bookshop, 220 High Street, Guildford, alternatively you can take your books to the Oxfam book banks listed at the back of this directory or to any charity shops.� Only good quality books please.

BRIC-A-BRAC

CANS
If your household receives a kerbside collection, please put these in your green box. Alternatively aluminium and steel cans can be recycled in can banks listed at the end of this directory. It is helpful to us if you wash and remove labels from the cans.

CAR BATTERIES
The liquid inside the battery is acidic and must be disposed of correctly. These can be taken to the Slyfield civic amenity site; you can find their details at the end of this directory.

CAR OIL

CARDBOARD
Take your cardboard to the banks listed at the back of this directory. Please include flat clean cardboard and cereal boxes. Please don't include plastic, packing material or drinks cartons as this will contaminate the whole load.

CARTONS
Any �tetrapak�-type cartons can be used for planting trees or as a plant pot. Put a couple of holes in the base to provide drainage.

CATALOGUES
Stapled catalogues can be recycled with newspapers and magazine banks; larger catalogues cannot be recycled due to the glue in the spine. Please put these out with yor normal refuse.

CHARITIES

Save the Children, 6 Jeffries Passage. Welcomes clean, good quality clothing, handbags, bric-a-brac and good toys. Due to limited space they are unable to accept larger items such as pushchairs, electrical goods or records.

The debra Charity Shop, 151 Send Road, Send, supports children who are sufferers of Epidermolysis Bullosa -EB. They have skin as fragile as a butterfly's wing which can blister at the slightest touch.� They can accept clean clothes and shoes, toys and games, small items of furniture (which adheres to fire and health and safety regulations), small domestic appliances and a host of other items in good condition. They cannot accept large furniture or electrical items. Please telephone the shop before making a delivery (01483) 225984.�

Oxfam, 66a Quarry Street, Guildford accept good quality clothing, coins, shoes in pairs, linen, bags and belts, books, bric-a �brac. They can only accept six black sacks full of goods in one visit, please deposit any excess in one of the Oxfam textile banks listed at the back of this directory. They cannot accept any furniture items.� If you have any queries, please contact them on (01483) 560722.

Phyllis Tuckwell (Local Hospice), Phoenix Court, off North Street, Guildford will accept any goods that are clean and will fit in the shop!! especially clothing, shoes, electrical equipment, bric-a-brac and books. All furniture items must adhere to fire and health and safety regulations. They have a special delivery point underneath the shop opposite the entrance to the Friary Centre, North Street, Guildford.� If you are delivering a large amount of goods, please contact the shop before (01483) 532123.

British Red Cross, Knaphill. They will accept any goods which are clean and in good condition, including clothes, books, bric-a-brac, small items of furniture (which adheres to fire and health and safety regulations), and small electrical appliances. FOOD WASTE
A Green Cone enables you to recycle all your food waste in your own garden. All you need to do is lift the lid and add all unwanted food.�� The cone uses the sun's energy to accelerate decomposition. The outside wall is translucent and the inside wall is black this absorbs energy, producing heat. There are vents inside the cone which allow heated moist air in, the air tight lid keeps hot air in and flies and pests out.� What goes in? All kitchen waste particularly fish, meat, bones, bread, dairy products, food scraps, vegetables and fruit. The Green Cone should only be emptied every couple of years if at all as the decomposing matter is absorbed by the ground. The cone should be placed in a shallow hole in loose well drained top soil, in a sunny spot convenient to your kitchen. To obtain a subsidised green cone please telephone (01483) 445084.

GARDEN (GREEN) WASTE
The earth machine composter will compost all of your garden waste and some kitchen food waste.� Ideal materials include garden clippings, flowers and leaves.� It will produce rich compost suitable for re-use on your garden.� The earth machine composter is available to residents of the Borough at the discounted price of �15.95 (incl. VAT and delivery), you can purchase one by ringing 0845 1 30 60 90. For more information about composting visit www.hdra.org.uk.

The Nippy Chipper operates on Tuesdays and Wednesdays chipping and bagging garden 'wood' waste on your doorstep, which is returned to you for use in the garden.� The chipping's can be used as mulch or made into compost.� All you have to do is have the wood ready for chipping at the front of your home.� Please include any branches, bushes, or tree trunks not more than 4 inches in diameter.� Don't include wooden objects such as fence posts and doors or metal including nails and large staples.� A modest charge is made for the service, please telephone (01483) 445084 for further details and booking information.�

The Green Waste Bay at the Slyfield civic amenity site accepts green garden waste from domestic households. This is taken away and turned into compost. You can find their details at the end of this directory.�

GLASS
Please take your glass to the banks listed at the back of this directory and deposit them in the relevant containers marked green, brown and clear glass.� Blue glass should be put in the container marked green glass.� Please include: Clean washed glass bottles and jars.� Don't include: Caps, lids & corks, ceramics & china, heat resistant cookware, bottles covered in plastic, or flat glass e.g. window panes.

If your household receives a kerbside collection glass can also be put in your green box.

GREEN BOX RECYCLING
Due to the success of the trial �Green box� recycling scheme this is being expanded to 50,000 households borough-wide. It collects glass, cans, newspapers and magazines via kerbside collections.

GREETINGS CARDS
In previous years Boots have organised special collections after Christmas.� Recycling boxes can be found in all stores from Christmas time until March.

Greetings Cards can also be recycled in the Blue Peter Appeal container, Sainsbury�s, Clay Lane, Burpham.

HABERDASHERY
Cotton reels, elastic, spare fabric etc..� can be given to �Tools For Self-Reliance�. Please ring Mr Derry Walker on (01483) 838678 (home) or (01932) 868883 (work).� Tools For Self Reliance works with six African countries, providing tools and training to help artisans and craft workers.

Work aid will accept tape measures, needles and bobbins, knitting machines, dress making and knitting patterns.� To check that your goods are suitable, please contact the area organiser Clare Smith� (01372) 378914. Any goods which they accept will need to be delivered to Leatherhead.

HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS
Weed killer, cleansing fluids and similar chemicals cannot be recycled but they can be taken to the Slyfield civic amenity for safe disposal. You can find their details at the end of this directory.

JUNK MAIL
Please take it to the Blue Peter Appeal container at Sainsburys, Clay Lane, Burpham.� To reduce the amount of junk mail that you receive, write to Mailing Preference Service, FREEPOST 22, London, WlE 7EZ. Ask them to remove you from any mailing lists they have.

KITCHEN or TOILET ROLL inners
These compost down wonderfully in a few months.

LIGHT BULBS
Unfortunately these cannot be recycled. Please DO NOT put these in the glass recycling banks, put them out with your refuse. Try to buy energy saving light bulbs. Although these are initially more expensive they use less electricity and last a lot longer. Most electrical retailers stock these.

LINEN

MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS
Take these to the bank locations listed at the back of this directory.� Please include: Magazines, newspapers and leaflets.� Don't include directories, junk mail, catalogues and envelopes (any glue, such as in the spine, makes paper unsuitable for recycling).

If your household receives a kerbside collection, newspapers and magazines can be put in your green box.

METAL
Scrap metal can be taken to the Slyfield civic amenity site; you can find their details at the end of this directory.

MOBILE PHONES
Your old mobile phones can be recycled by the following organisations:

The Pocket Phone Shop, 7 Market Street, Guildford. These will be recycled and profits are given to the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID). For more information please contact (01483) 458488.

Royal Surrey Hospital�s Abracadabra Appeal. The mobile phones will be recycled and the revenue will go towards building the new Children�s Centre.� Any phones manufactured over the last 3 years are welcome, preferably including battery and charger. They must be out of contract and free from any other contractual or other financial agreements with the suppliers. For more details please ring Christine Allen (01483) 464146.

Cooking or vegetable oil cannot be recycled, but can be reused.� Soak up this oil with stale bread or cake and put out for birds or wildlife.

A trial plastic recycling scheme is planned for the future. Look out in the local press for more details.

PRINTER CARTRIDGES
You can send your used printer and toner cartridges to the following organisations who will recycle them and donate the money to a charity.

Grant Carlyle, 23 Heath House, Heath Lane, Farnham.� A small amount of money will be given for cartridges collected on behalf of a charity.� Telephone (01252) 727223.

The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation Fund. Please ring 08451 302010 for a FREEPOST envelope to send your cartridges to the appeal or if you have a substantial amount they will collect them.

The Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) also wants used laser and inkjet cartridges for recycling.� Freephone 0800 781 2400 or email [email protected]� for more information.

RECYCLING SCHEMES
A.B. ELECTRICAL
A.B. Electrical commercial recycling company recycles around 1,000 tonnes of electrical items which it exports to third world countries to aid economic development. They will accept a wide range of electrical items including, televisions, video recorders, computer equipment, all types of music equipment, household appliances and much more.� They will also collect non-electrical items such as saucepans, kitchen utensils, bicycles, carpets, shoes and manual typewriters. The company primarily deal in commercial clearances but will consider domestic clearances. The items do not have to work and the age of the items is immaterial. If not repairable they are dissembled for spare parts. They will provide a free collection service provided there is sufficient quantity. Please leave a clear message stating your name, telephone number, address and a brief description of the items to be collected. The company may not be able to respond for several days but they will keep any appointments made.

SURREY SPRINGBOARD
Surrey Springboard aims to reduce crime in the community by providing a range of employment, accommodation and leisure opportunities for offenders under the supervision of the probation service. It does this by offering employment through its own recycling enterprise, assisting offenders with training, education, employment or constructive use of their leisure time and assisting with securing suitable accommodation for offenders. They will accept bicycles, furniture and computer equipment (Minimum Pentium 1). SEWING MACHINES
Old manual Singer sewing machines are needed by �Tools for Self Reliance�.� They must be round bobbin, manual machines. �Tools For Self Reliance� works with six African countries, providing tools and training to help artisans and craft workers. Workaid will also accept Singer sewing machines (manual, electric, hand or treadle) and Knitting machines. Most of the tools which Workaid refurbishes goes to training and other projects in East and Central Africa and other deprived areas of the world. SHOES
The European Recycling Company collect worn-out, outgrown or just unwanted shoes. Please give your shoes in pairs, preferably tied together or in a bag.� Each and every year in the United Kingdom over 260 million pairs of new shoes are bought, later they will be discarded.� The materials used in making shoes are not normally biodegradable.� The shoes which can be reconditioned and re-used are sold to companies and individuals in the Third World and Eastern Europe. These refurbished shoes are then sold at an affordable price to those who otherwise would go without. If you can't get to one of the recycling bank locations listed at the back of this directory you can take your shoes to the collection point outside one of the following retail outlets:

Make a difference - buy recycled. Choose to buy products made from recycled materials this reduces the amount going to landfill and helps to conserve resources and energy.� Avoid over packaged goods and buy refillable containers where available.
