WHERE HAVE THE WOMBLES BEEN WANDERING OVER THE WINTER MONTHS?
Guildford and Waverley Wombles have been very busy over the Christmas period - they have been out and about in the two Boroughs meeting residents and spreading the recycling message.
The Wombles have also been helping Guildford and Waverley Borough Councils answer calls from lots of residents who want to be reminded of where to recycle their Christmas waste. They would like to remind everyone that Christmas trees can still be recycled at Civic Amenity sites across both Boroughs and that Christmas cards can be deposited for recycling at branches of WH Smith and Tesco, or at any of Waverley’s locality offices. Cardboard packaging can be recycled at the kerbside in Guildford, in the new Purple Boxes, and in Waverley it can be taken to bring sites across the Borough.
Guildford Womble was seen at Burpham Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s Superstore in December, encouraging shoppers to consider reducing the amount of packaging waste they produce at Christmas by purchasing loose fruit and vegetables and goods packaged in recyclable materials. He also made an appearance at the Christmas lights switch-on and visited White Lion Walk in Guildford just before Christmas to put a smile on the faces of all those last-minute shoppers!
Waverley Womble enjoyed spreading the Christmas recycling message to residents of Farnham when he made an appearance at the switch-on of the town’s Christmas lights at the end of November. He also enjoyed meeting all the people at the Winter Wonderland festival, held at The Maltings in Farnham in December. Waverley Womble had a very bright Christmas this year, as he also attended the Godalming Christmas lights switch-on event.
Guildford and Waverley Borough Councils are thrilled that the Wombles are meeting so many of the Boroughs’ residents, and that they are so well received by everyone they meet. Councillor Jenny Wicks, Lead Member for the Environment for Guildford, commented: “Keep an eye out over the coming months for both Guildford and Waverley Wombles. They have had such fun over Christmas, meeting new friends and encouraging them to reduce, re-use and recycle their waste. They are very excited about all the fun they will have in 2004 too, and are looking forward to hearing how well residents have been doing with their recycling.”
