Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management define sports development as follows:
‘Sports development is concerned with the provision and enhancement of opportunities to participate in sport. It is about opportunity for everybody, the disadvantages, the able, the young, the beginner, the potential start, coaches, officials and administrators.
Central to the concept is the belief that all those who take part in sport should be encouraged and have the opportunity to reach their maximum potential with the only constraints being their interest and ability.’
Borough is recognized in the top 5 for Sports Development
QUEST, Sport England’s UK Quality Scheme for Sport and Leisure, provides the benchmark in the measurement of quality and continuous improvement.
QUEST accreditation is only awarded to services that demonstrate that they offer a quality service measured against strict standards of UK-wide best practice and prove that they are improving service over time.
The recent QUEST assessment for Guildford Borough Council’s Sports Development service returned a score of 73%. To date this is the 5th highest score in the UK, bettered only by Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Kent, and Stockton, all of which have a team or more than one Sports Development Officer. To achieve a mark of this caliber demonstrates that quality is prevalent in all areas of Sports Development in Guildford.
