The Department of Leisure Services has produced the following key documents.

 

 

 

CULTURAL STRATEGY

The Government’s Department for Culture Media and Sport encouraged every Local Authority to produce a Cultural Strategy to provide a direction for cultural provision within the area administered by that authority for the next five or more years. Through careful consultation, monitoring and evaluation the document will be continually updated to keep it meaningful and current.  Guildford Borough Council would have been undertaking the exercise anyway, to update its Leisure Strategy and because the production of the Cultural Strategy provides a useful framework for future action in respect of all interested parties who work in the cultural sphere in the Borough.

 

Although this Strategy has been produced by the Borough Council it is not a Council document. It is a Strategy formulated through extensive consultation with people and organisations within Guildford Borough to develop and to embrace cultural provision for the benefit of all. It is a document by the people, for the people, of the Borough. You will see therefore that many of the proposals within the Action Plan in Section 8 of the document can only be achieved through organisations working in partnership with others or the Borough Council encouraging others to achieve the desired outcomes.

MISSION STATEMENT

 

The Council’s Leisure Services aims to meet the people of Guildford’s needs for leisure, both through the direct provision of facilities and services and through partnerships with other agencies and providers to enable a full range of stimulating activities to take place.

 

Service Information: Leisure Services Strategy and Business Support

PURPOSE: To provide a central business/administrative support service for the Department of Leisure Services including strategic initiatives; Arts, Play & Sports Development Services and assist in the overall operation of the Department.

 OBJECTIVES:

1.       To create a framework which builds upon and takes into account the existing arts, play and sports infrastructure within the Borough in order to develop leisure opportunities.

2.       To provide a fully integrated secretarial and administrative support service to the Director of Leisure Services, Sports, Arts and Play Development Services.

3.       To disseminate information within Leisure Services in respect of current standards, legislation, council initiatives and procedures.

4.       To initiate and co-ordinate strategic planning on all aspects of leisure in Guildford.

5.       To co-ordinate, prepare and produce Corporate and Departmental strategic documents as directed by the Government and other agencies.

6.       To assist in the development and implementation of Departmental initiatives.

7.       To represent the Department on internal and external groups.

8.       To oversee the operation of the Council’s Youth and Community Centres under the Best Value framework.

9.       To administer and monitor leisure services catering contracts for The Electric Theatre, Guildford House Gallery, Lido and Stoke Park Kiosk.

10.    To co-ordinate and administer the Guildford International Women’s Festival and Guildford Summer Festival.
