Book Festival
at The Electric Theatre
October at The Electric Theatre means only one thing…The Guildford Book Festival. It’s due to be back again in the autumn with a packed programme which promises lots of  entertainment and exciting discoveries!

The 2003 Festival hosted events featuring the following authors:
Sir Bernard Ingham, Barry Norman, Joan Bakewell, Tracy Chevalier, Phillippa Gregory, Patrick Gale, Ben Fogle, Alexei Sayle, Francine Stock...to name but a few!

The brochure will be out in September, so before then, make sure you are on the mailing list by calling our box office on 01483 444789!

In the meantime, here's an event to look foward to!

This year, for the first time, the Festival is planning to hold events throughout the year leading up to October. On 10 March we feature and event with Josceline Dimbleby. She will be in conversation with John Miller and will illustrate the talk with slides.

A Profound Secret
May Gaskell, her daughter Amy and Edward Burne-Jones

A Profound Secret
is best selling cookery author Josceline Dimbleby’s quest to discover the truth about her great-grandmother, the last great love of the pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne-Jones, revealed through their passionate correspondence.  In doing so, Josceline reveals the private side of Burne-Jones, which has never been told before. It is also the story of May Gaskell, who lived for another forty years after his death and was uniquely responsible for starting the British War Library. Finally, this is the story of her lovely daughter Amy, whose life was as mysterious as her death and whose haunting portrait forms part of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s art collection.

Spanning the years 1840-1940, the book covers The Boer War and two world wars, seen, unusually, from a woman’s point of view, as well as taking us to far-flung parts of the British Empire. Rudyard Kipling, William Morris and many other famous Victorians play a part in this fascinating family saga.

We are delighted to welcome John back to chair another Book Festival event. He has written the authorised biographies of Ralph Richardson, Judi Dench and Peter Ustinov, collaborated with Gielgud on his memoirs and also with John Mills on his updated autobiography. He broadcasts regularly on historical and theatrical subjects.
