ALAN GALLOP – CHILDREN OF THE DARK: LIFE AND DEATH UNDERGROUND IN VICTORIAN ENGLAND

In Children of the Dark, Alan Gallop  recreates the events surrounding the 1838 Huskar Pit disaster at Silkstone, South Yorkshire, where 26 children died in a flooded mine shaft.  Alan Gallop's powerful and dramatic account exposes the real lives and working conditions in the mining communities.

Sir Bernard Ingham spent 11 years as chief press secretary to Margaret Thatcher, having been Director of Information at the Departments of Employment and Energy, and  spending his early years as a journalist. He talks about his fascinating book, The Wages of Spin - A Clear Case of Communications Gone Wrong.

Professor Purvis’s book is the first full length biography of the suffragette leader for nearly 70 years. The book documents Emmeline’s early political work, her active role within the suffragette movement and her role as wife and mother.
