Electric Theatre

Tobias Smollett wrote his comic novel in 1771. Relating the round-Britain travels of the Bramble family and his hero, the Wiltshire lad, Humphrey Clinker. Jonathan Newth and Maggie McCarthy bring their delightful adaptation of this classic novel to Guildford.

Jonathan Newth has worked extensively in television, starring in popular series such as Poldark, Tenko and After Henry. His theatre work includes numerous plays in the West End and several years with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Maggie McCarthy, in her words, “has been around for several years in T.V., films, radio and theatre.”
However this is her first appearance in Guildford. She has recently been seen on TV in P.D.James’ Death in Holy Orders and, fleetingly, in the film Calendar Girls.

SALON EVENING – WITTY CULTURE ON THE EDGE
With CAROLE HAYMAN,  MAGGIE McCARTHY, FAY WELDON, APRIL DE ANGELIS AND FRIENDS, WITH MUSIC BY FRENCH CLICHÉ
Electric Theatre
7.30pm for 8pm
£8. £7 Friends of GBF

Carole Hayman, Fay Weldon, Maggie McCarthy, April de Angelis and friends invite you to be
astonished and entertained at a Salon Evening. We welcome you to a very special, end of Festival evening of performance, readings and musical intervals played by the superb duo, French Cliché.

Carole Hayman is a writer, broadcaster and journalist, best known as the co-author of the Radio 4 hit series Ladies of Letters. Her latest highly controversial novel, Hard Choices, is a wickedly satirical tale of good and evil in the near-future world of politics.

Fay Weldon is one of our best-loved writers of both novels and short stories. She has published over 20 novels and her autobiography, Auto da Fay, was published to great acclaim. Her two new plays are Tango in the City and Madame Bovary.

Maggie McCarthy
Following the afternoon’s performance of Humphrey Clinker, Maggie shows her versatility when she joins Carole in a reading.

April de Angelis is a playwright. Her play No Laughing Matter was acclaimed as a brilliantly witty success when it was produced at the National Theatre’s Cottesloe Theatre earlier this year.

French Cliché are a duo, Jen Moss and Jonas Jalhay, whose music embraces jazz, country and soft rock with an occasional continental feel. Beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics are performed with warmth and skill.
