KATHLEEN TESSARO - ELEGANCE
Guildford Library
6.30pm
£5 (incl. glass of wine)

Kathleen Tessaro’s début novel, Elegance, was inspired by an A-Z on “ how to be stylish and elegant”, written by a Frenchwoman in the 1960s. It is the story of Louise, who, after discovering and reading the manual, finds the life lessons she needs to regain her self esteem and end an unhappy marriage.

POETRY EVENING with ANTHONY THWAITE & SARAH WARDLE
Guildhall, High Street
7pm
£5. £4 Friends of GBF

Anthony Thwaite reads from his latest collection of poetry, A Move in Weather. These poems span a life-time, focusing on what lasts and what vanishes – dreams, memories, people and objects.

Sarah Wardle reads from her first collection, Fields Away, in poetry ranging from playful wit to gentle lyrics. Sarah won Poetry Review’s New Poet of the Year Award in 1999. Her collection, Fields Away was shortlisted for the Forward Prize.

TRAVELLERS’ TALES
With ANNIE CAULFIELD, BEN FOGLE, CATHARINE HARTLEY & REDMOND O’HANLON
Electric Theatre
8pm
£ 7 (incl. glass of wine) £6 Friends of GBF (incl. glass of wine)

Annie Caulfield chairs an evening of adventure and exploration with Catharine Hartley, Ben Fogle and Redmond O’Hanlon

Annie Caulfield’s Show Me the Magic is Annie’s hilarious account of her adventures in Benin guided by Isidore, a charismatic but extremely irritating taxi-driver.

On January 2000 Catharine Hartley and Fiona Thorne will became the first British women to walk to the South Pole, topping it the following year by man-hauling their sleds to the North Pole.  To the Poles (without a Beard) is a wonderful tale of an ordinary woman’s quest to achieve a dream.

Ben Fogle has always had wanderlust. In 1999 he volunteered for BBC’s Castaway 2000, an experience that re-kindled a childhood desire to reach his obscure Teatime Islands. His wit, energy and infectious enthusiasm infuse the stories of his travels.

Redmond O’Hanlon joined the crew of the trawler Norlantean on the North Atlantic, in the worst weather at the very worst time of year, not knowing ’his arse form his tit’. Trawler is the very funny story of this adventure and is a worthy successor to his previous book Into the Heart of Borneo.
