The Festival was founded in 1990 and is held annually during October-November in a variety of venues throughout the ancient town of Guildford. This two-week Festival includes events with celebrated and new writers, workshops, poetry performances, children’s events, competitions, First Novel Award, literary lunches and teas.
Its appeal lies in its diversity and its aim is to involve, instruct and entertain all who care about literature.
Pendleton May First Novel Award: this is an annual award sponsored by Pendleton May, Insurance Brokers and Financial Advisors, and Guildford Arts. The Award is for £1,500 and is for published first novels by writers living in London and the South of England.
Allianz Cornhill Short Story Competition: an annual competition sponsored by Allianz-Cornhill Insurance for short stories of up to 2,000 words. Leaflets giving full information will be available from the Tourist Information Centre at the beginning of June. The stories will be judged by a panel, headed by Penny Vincenzi.
W H Smiths Children’s Story Competition: this is open to children and young people living in Surrey, between the ages of 7-15. Entry forms will be available from W H Smiths stores in Guildford and from all Surrey libraries.
The 2003 programme has been finalised but writers appearing include Sir Bernard Ingham, Patrick Gale, Patricia Duncker, Rachel Trethewey, and Alan Gallop.
