Homelessness Review

& Prevention

Strategy 2003/06

The Homelessness Act 2002 requires every local authority to carry out a review of homelessness in its area and to develop a strategy for tackling it.  The changes are aimed at promoting a more strategic approach to managing homelessness.

In meeting their duties under this part of the Act, local authorities must consider homelessness in its broadest sense and not just limit their activities to people who are unintentionally homeless and in priority need. The Act also requires Social Service departments to work with housing authorities to prevent homelessness.

The Act provides an opportunity to redirect homelessness services away from crisis intervention towards prevention and focus and on increasing support services to help people maintain their homes.

It is our intention to use the Homelessness Review & Prevention Strategy as a practical tool in addressing the needs of homeless people and in offering real choice.

We are keen to hear your views on all aspects of the document and proposals for meeting the needs of homeless people – if you wish to comment or find out more about prevention of homelessness please send email to [email protected]
