Over 12 tonnes of old Yellow Pages saved from dumping in Surrey |
Recently published results from the Yellow pages recycling scheme show that, thanks to the distribution of over 30 special collection banks for old Yellow Pages in Woking and Guildford, precious landfill has been saved from the annual dumping of old directories
This latest initiative to “Do Your Bit” was run by Woking and Guildford Borough Councils in partnership with Surrey Waste Management and Yell’s Directory Recycling Scheme.
The collection of old directories exceeded targets set by SWM and they hope to extend this innovative scheme to other parts of the county.
Jane Gunn Waste Minimisation Advisor explains “When the directories are placed in normal paper banks, the collections become “contaminated”. The dye and spine prevent them from being recycled with normal paper and that is why they have to be handled separately. With this scheme in place, the directories can be turned into new paper products or shredded for packaging or animal bedding”.
Adam Billiald from Yell’s Directory Recycling Scheme is delighted with the initiative. He comments “Collecting over 12 tonnes is an excellent achievement. It is great that so many old books can be recycled in to new paper products and kept away from landfill. Woking and Guildford Boroughs worked very hard with SWM to achieve these excellent results”.

Press Release July 2003
New editions of Yellow Pages are due to be delivered in the Guildford area in late July/early August. If you would like to recycle your old one there will be banks available between 11th August and 8th September at the location listed below. Yellow pages are difficult to recycle because of the excessive amount of ink used on very thin paper. However in this novel scheme directories collected from our banks will be shredded and used as animal bedding. Please do your best to ensure that your old Yellow Pages is re-used in this way rather than landfilled.
