Community Clean Up Fun Days

A series of Community Clean Ups have been organised by the Cleansing Department in conjunction with the Community Safety Wardens during 2003 to tackle areas where the public are concerned about regular littering and fly-tipping.

Events have been held to tackle Tongham Recreation Ground, Southway in Park Barn, Slyfield Green in Stoke, Bushy Hill estate in Merrow and Ash Hill Estate in Ash.

The events have proved popular with local residents, with up to 70 residents attending some of them!  One events resulted in over 70 bags of litter being collected, weighing over one tonne!

Further clean ups days are being planned for 2004 - watch this space!

The events are open to everyone – accompanied children, families, youth groups, residents associations and businesses – please do come along and support us.  We have organised FREE refreshments and prizes…….including a chance to win tickets to see the Guildford Flames.

FAST FOOD SEMINAR AND TIDY BUSINESS STANDARDS

The first of its kind, Guildford’s Fast Food Seminar brought together some of the major businesses in Guildford to talk about the problem of litter in the town centre.  Businesses invited included nightclubs, bars, cafes, fast food restaurants, takeaways, snack bars and newsagents.

The seminar aimed to inform businesses about litter in Guildford and residents concerns, it gave them information about their legal duties and culminated in a brainstorm on ways of working together to tackle the problem.

The most exciting outcome was the support gained for ENCAMS “Tidy Business Standards” Award.  Over 13 businesses have already signed up to the scheme and it will be launched early in 2004.  If you would like to find out more about Tidy Business Standards please contact Katherine Willmott 01483 444512/5087 or [email protected]

CAR LITTER CAMPAIGN

Over one million bits of rubbish are thrown on Britain’s roads every weekend!

Motorists in Guildford are being urged to help keep the borough clean and take their litter home.  The Council’s Cleansing Department launched the campaign outside Burger King, Ladymead Retail Park on 21 August 2003.

The cleansing team gave drivers litter bags and asked them to bag and bin their rubbish.    The campaign is designed to raise awareness of car litter and encourage motorists to take responsibility for their own rubbish.  By disposing of waste properly we can all make a real difference to the cleanliness of Guildford.

PARK BARN “ON THE SPOT”

Surprised shoppers and children who put their rubbish in litterbins in Guildford’s Park Barn have been presented, on the spot, with prizes for playing their part in the Borough’s clean up campaign.

In an event sponsored by local businesses, Guildford Borough Council officers were keen to reward visitors who are supporting the Council’s Litter Free Borough Campaign.

Prizes were donated by Debenhams, the Lido, Spectrum and Tesco, who support the campaign’s aim of keeping Guildford and its surrounding area clean and enjoyable.
