Why save water?
It's a reasonable question - after all, this country seems to have its fair share of rain. But things are changing: Population is growing, there are more smaller households, more water using appliances, and the effects of climate change means there is less water available per head of population. That's why it's important that we all take action to help conserve our water resources.
Take a look at some of our tips on how you can save water in the home.
1. Get a FREE Water Hippo
Almost a third of the water we use at home is flushed down our toilets. Fitting a Hippo or other water reducing device in the average cistern will save up to 3 litres of water with every flush! Hippos or other cistern reduction devices are available from your water provider, please consult your bill and phone the Customer services number. .
2. Watch how you use your Washing Machine
You can also save water by ONLY using your washing machine when you have a full load and washing clothes at 40degrees.
3. Take a shower
Showers use substantially less water than a bath so try to have a shower as much as possible.
4. In Your Garden
Don’t use a hose in your garden, try to use a watering can as it will use a lot less water. You can also recycle water in your garden by using a rainbutt which collects up surface water runoff which would usually just go to the sewers. Collecting this is a very cheap and sound method of obtaining water which can be used on the garden, instead of using water from the mains. The quality of water is also usually better as it does not have the chemicals in it caused by purifying the water at the mains e.g. chlorine, fluorine. Grey water (recycled water from sinks, baths, showers etc) can be used on the garden, after a bit of novel plumbing and filtration.
5. Water Efficiency
When buying a new washing machine, dishwasher or tumble dryer, choose ones rated A for energy consumption. These will usually be water efficient as well, and will save you money over its lifetime.
