Why Home Energy Efficiency?
There are many good reasons to save energy but perhaps the most important is the threat of Climate Change. One of the gases produced by burning fossil fuels is Carbon Dioxide (CO2). The increased level of CO2 in the atmosphere is causing the temperature all over the world to increase – the so called Greenhouse Effect, which leads to Climate Change. In this country, about 25% of CO2 emissions come from the use of fossil energy – that’s gas, oil, coal and electricity - in homes, and in an effort to reduce this amount, the government introduced the Home Energy Conservation Act or ‘HECA’ in 1995. HECA requires local authorities to make plans for saving up to 30% of the energy used in homes over the next few years.
Take a look at some of the ways you can help us reach these targets, and help protect the environment.
- Find out if you are entitled to a Grant!
If you receive a low income, you may be eligible for heating, insulation or other energy efficiency measures for your home. To find out more, contact the private sector housing team at Guildford Borough Council on 01483 444302.
Guildford Housewarmers offers discounts and grants for a variety of energy efficiency measures. Anyone qualifies for the scheme so call 0800 358 8007 for details.
- Energy Saving Lightbulbs!
Save energy by buying energy saving lightbulbs, plugs and lamps. Talk to your electricity or gas supply company. Many have special offers on packs of energy saving bulbs.
- Insulation
To keep your home warm and cheaper to run, think about insulating your roof, walls, floors and pipes. It will save you money AND help protect the environment.
- Draught-proofing
By reducing draughts, you can keep your house warmer, save money AND help the environment. Windows, doors, loft hatch, letter box, keyholes – all can be draught-proofed.
- Efficient heating
If you need to replace your boiler, consider an efficient condensing type. It may cost a little extra, but grants are available and the savings you will make will pay for the difference in cost in a very short time.
- Electrical Appliances
Many white goods now carry Energy Efficient labels. Look for an A or B rated model. Remember that an appliance left on standby still uses energy so try to turn them off when not in use. You can also save energy by ONLY using your washing machine when you have a full load and washing clothes at 40 degrees. Try to dry your clothes outside rather than using a tumble dryer.
