Guildford Borough Council is committed to promoting sustainable transport and providing travel choice for the community.

A network of cycle routes is being created in partnership with Surrey County Council, while a number of pedestrian improvements have been made through the implementation of the borough's Walking and Lighting Strategies.  (Some examples of these improvement schemes can be seen under the 'Special Projects' and 'Engineering' areas of this website.) Five park and ride sites now serve the Town at weekdays and weekends, with two more sites planned to help ease congestion in the town centre and reduce the pressure on parking.

Guildford is well served by public transport and together with the County Council and private operators, the Borough Council are continuously looking to help improve passenger transport services and encourage their wider use.

The Council has its own Green Travel Plan and aims to promote Travel Plans to businesses and other public sector companies in an effort to reduce peak time congestion and improve air quality and the local environment. A Travel Plan is a package of practical measures, tailored to the needs of individual businesses and organisations. They aim to provide staff with viable options for travel and can help create a healthier workforce, reduce the pressure on workplace parking, provide cost savings for the company and can assist in reducing peak hour congestion. To date the Council has taken the following action:

  • Showers/changing facilities for staff
  • Flexible working hours
  • Two pool cars
  • Two pool bikes
  • Umbrellas available to borrow at reception
  • Interest free cycle loans for staff
  • Cycle business mileage
  • Interest free train and bus season tickets for staff
  • Discounted Arriva bus season tickets for staff
  • Covered cycle parking and secure lockers
  • Internal car share database
  • Emergency lift home scheme for car sharers
  • Program of converting all fleet vehicles to LPG or low carbon diesel
  • Introduction of a bus stop at Council offices for Park and Ride (including Real Time Passenger Information)
  • Various promotional events such as “bike to work day” and “In Town Without my Car day”.
  • Regular meetings with Public Sector partners to discuss travel plans and work in partnership on areas of policy.
  • Commissioned deliveries report and visitor survey to direct future actions.
