The Arnaud Theatre Walkway

Yvonne Arnaud Theatre Walkway

Illumination for footlights walkway

New blue lighting has been installed to bring out the charm of Guildford's Theatre Walkway and increase security for pedestrians.

The Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Tony Phillips, and Yvonne Arnaud trustees helped launch the lighting scheme as part of Guildford Borough Council's Lighting Strategy; this aims to use light imaginatively to reduce crime and the fear of crime.

In this case, blue light from discreet and energy efficient fittings focuses on the curved wall of the theatre. The project was carried out by Guildford Borough Council environmental planning group, working closely with the Surrey Police, Surrey County Council and Urbis Lighting Consultants.

The walkway leads from the town centre to the theatre and Millmead car park. It complements recent lighting improvements to Rosemary Alley, which increase light levels in that historically sensitive passageway.

Rotunda

The Rotunda

A pedestrian area outside The Friary, North Street known as The Rotunda has been transformed by a new lighting scheme. The space including the taxi rank opposite had been identified as an area that attracts anti-social behaviour with street crime also an issue particularly at night.

To reduce the threatening feel of the area lighting is now projected into the space by small projectors attached at high level to the surrounding buildings. They reflect a dynamic circular flowing image onto the paving in the main circular area using pink and gold tones to complement the original surface material. The lighting scheme also highlights the large tree at the edge of the space by throwing dots of white light onto its canopy and to bring interest to the area around the taxi rank, a projector throws a light image onto the blank wall of the Friary creating a more comfortable feel.

The lighting improvements were implemented as part of Phase 1 of the Borough Council’s Lighting Strategy, which aims to use light imaginatively to reduce crime and the fear of crime.  Design work has begun on many projects in the second phase of the lighting strategy. In addition to key pedestrian routes in the town centre, walkways around Westborough, Onslow and Stoughton will be worked on including the underpass near Tesco’s and the route from the University to the town centre.
