A partnership of bodies is investigating installing a hydro power station at the tollhouse beside the Yvonne Arnaud theatre.
The partnership consists of the following; - Yvonne Arnaud Theatre - Guildford Environmental Forum - Energy conservation & Solar Centre - Jose Marques Ltd - Guildford Borough Council |
Guildford had hydro power before the Navigation was constructed in 1653. The water mill alongside the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre originally provided motive power for grinding flour in the mill, now the Mill studio.
In 1930, this was converted to pump water up to the Pewley Hill reservoir. In 1990, the now redundant turbine was removed and donated to the National Trust, who now exhibit it at Dapdune Wharf.
One option is to refurbish and replace this, another is for a completely new turbine to be installed. |

FEASIBILITY STUDY
Funding has been obtained for a full feasibility study from a combination of grant funding bodies. If this shows the scheme is practical, including the economics, funding will be sought from sources that exist to support projects such as these. A consultation was held eliciting more than 80 responses from local people. 97% supported the project with 91% agreeing there should be more renewable energy used in the Borough. Support for specific technologies was more mixed with 56% supporting wind, 95% solar, 89% hydro, and only 44% biomass. The latter was not understood or recognized by the majority of those responding. Several people offered their services professionally towards the project. |
