Guildford Solar Car Challenge 2004 Solar Car

Seventeen schools and youth groups will be competing in the 2004 Guildford solar car challenge during the summer term.

Budding environmental engineers and designers will be put to the test in two categories; best design and fastest car. The project aims to raise awareness of renewable energy and promote awareness of climate change.

Cllr Jenny Wicks said, "We have had an exciting response to the challenge with so many groups joining in. It offers a great opportunity for young people to get hands on experience of renewable energy and learn about energy, resources and pollution."

Judges will visit participating schools and groups during the summer term to judge the best design and fastest car.

Energy Matters

The programme is ideal for schools who are looking
for a ready-to-run project that needs very little
preparation time and is great for:

  • activity weeks
  • as a post SATs project;
  • bridging KS 2 and 3 initiatives; and
  • teaching sustainable development, citizenship and energy issues within the curriculum.

'Energy matters' is written by teachers and is based around a home energy survey that allows pupils to gather real data in a familiar environment, analyse this data and produce recommendations for improving energy use, based upon their findings.
