Most schools in our borough are carrying out some environmentally-based projects. We are hoping to show you some of them on these pages.

Pirbright County Primary school
Pirbright County Primary school have been working extremely hard on their environmental programme.

The most amazing aspect of their programme is that the children love being involved. They volunteer to do litter picks, collect white paper for recycling and enjoy developing allotments and gardens.
Gill Denyer, the Year 3 teacher, has been leading the white paper recycling programme and the school now collect 2 bags full each week.

The success of the programme seems to be because the children enjoy taking the lead on collecting the paper and because Gill has introduced a basket to each classroom for the white paper.

Gill also encourages all teachers and pupils to use both sides of every piece of paper before it is recycled.

The school has a beautiful ‘Senses’ garden which allows children to have quiet time in the grounds and to learn about the environment. The school is also planning to develop their allotments and will involve both pupils and their families.

Having received a grant of £220 us in 2002, they have also introduced a successful school walking bus.
If your school would like advice on running programmes similar to
Pirbright, please phone Katherine Willmott on 01483 444512.
George Abbot School
George Abbot School have a number of schemes running at the moment.
Jackie Tonge has set up a white paper recycling scheme within the school with the help of Year 9 pupils and have managed to ensure a high percentage of the schools paper is now recycled.
Mobile Phone Collection
George Abbot School are collecting old phones, manual and chargers to help raise awareness and money for the Abracadabra Appeal. Every year a quarter of all the children in the Guildford area are treated at the Royal Surrey’s paediatric department and the Abracadabra Appeal hopes to ensure young patients get the best possible facilities as well as receiving the highest standard of care.
The phones are sold to China which due to its vastness in size is unable to have a phone line system, therefore they are heavily dependant upon mobile phones.

Congratulations to Annabelle Molina for her fantastic poster design in aid of the Mobile Phone Collection in school.
