Council initiatives

Guildford Borough Council does a lot of work in-house to ensure we are limiting the impact that we have on the environment.

These are some of the things we are doing:

Green champions

Guildford Borough Council staff from various departments have volunteered to be 'Green Champions' and they work to ensure that their departments are doing everthing possible to reduce waste and energy use and maximise recycling!

All of the Green Champions do a fantastic job and have made a huge difference to the Council’s impact on the environment.

Recycling & waste

Following a number of changes at the Council offices, the internal recycling scheme has gone from strength to strength.  In fact, office paper recovered has gone from 6% in 2000 to around 40% during 2002.

All parts of the Council are encouraged to recycle their office paper, cans, plastic bottles and printer cartridges.  Staff are encouraged to re-use items wherever possible and to reduce their overall waste.

Energy Use

Guildford Borough Council has began introducing sensory lights into meeting rooms to reduce energy wastage.  Staff are encouraged to turn off all IT and electrical equipment when not in use!

The Council is also pursuing energy efficiency by managing its energy, gas and water bills more effectively to reduce cost and consumption.  It has recently signed up to a contract for 64% of its electricity to be from a green or renewable source.
