Local Agenda 21
Local Agenda

Guildford Borough Council is committed to the Local Agenda 21 process.  The orginal Local Agenda 21 Strategy 2000 document contains more general information about the process and the orginal action plans.  Our plan will help to build sustainable development into all the Council's activities improving the Borough for those who live and work here.

There are three main areas on which the document focuses; the economy, the environment and the community. Each of these topics is broken down further into specific topics such as energy, transport, community safety and education.

Summary document 2003

The Council wants to continually monitor and improve its environmental performance. Our Local Agenda 21 Summary Document 2002/03 outlines the progress we have made since the publicaton of the first Process Report in 2001/02 and the targets we have set ourselves.

Sustainability Indicators

These are a new addition to the 2002/03 strategy. They will be used to measure progress in each area our of work and will be measured annually.

Linked to the summary documents are Technical Appendices which provide more detail and action plans.

What is Local Agenda 21?

In 1992 the United Nations Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro established that the only way to reconcile the needs for future economic prosperity and social equity while protecting the environment is through sustainable development.

What is Sustainable Development?

'Development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.'
                                                           Brundtland Commission, 1987

To support sustainable development an international programme was established called Agenda 21 (an Agenda for the 21st century). At a local level the programme is called Local Agenda 21.
