Guildford Hydro project

A partnership of bodies is considering installing a hydro power station at the tollhouse beside the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.

We need the views of local people to ensure they support the project.

Please take a few minutes to read this and answer a few questions giving us YOUR views.

FACT BOX   The proposed turbine will generate electricity from water falling through a turbine.

Output : 45kW(e) (equivalent to around 45 houses)

Other renewable sources of energy are;

  • Solar
  • Wind
  • Biomass*

* Use of wood or other green material either to make fuels or burnt to create electricity.

Many people are now considering installing renewable energy devices such as solar panels, and grants are available.  Please tick the box on the back page if you are interested.

Guildford had hydro power before navigation was constructed in 1653.  The water mill alongside the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre originally provided motive power for grinding flour in the mill, now the Mill Studio.

In 1930, this was converted to pump water up to Pewley Hill reservoir.  In 1990, the now redundant turbine was removed and donated to the National Trust, who now exhibit it at Dapdune Wharf.  One option is to refurbish and replace this, another is for a completely new turbine to be installed.

Funding has been obtained for a full feasibility study.  If this shows the scheme is practical, including the economics, funding will be sought from sources that exist to support projects such as these.

Guildford, like the rest of the UK and other countries, produce global warming gases which are leading to rises in the earths temperature.  The UK’s Climate Change Strategy encourages projects such as these which do not contribute to global warming.

England has set a target of reducing its CO2 emissions by 20% by the year 2010 compared to 1990. Utilities such as SEEBOARD are required to obtain 10.4% of their supply from renewable sources by 2010.
