What happens once a complaint is made?
Once a complaint is made it will be allocated to an officer.
We are able to deal with noise from domestic and commercial properties including barking and howling dogs. For more information on dog barking click here.
We aim to respond to all complaints within 3 working days.
If you are complaining about noise from a council property you will need to contact the housing manager for that property. They can be contacted in the Borough Housing Department.
What happens next?
Our first action will normally be to try to solve the problem informally.
If this fails an Abatement Notice can be served, for this to happen the noise must amount to a statutory nuisance however there is no set level at which noise becomes a statutory nuisance. It is based on an assessment of Londoners, duration and the characteristics of the noise.
To determine this you will ordinarily be asked to keep a diary of noise occurrence for four weeks. We may also install noise-monitoring equipment in your property for up to 7 days.
Your complaint will be dealt with in confidence, however if legal proceedings take place it may be necessary to release your name.
It is a criminal offence to fail to comply with an Abatement Notice and a person can be prosecuted.
There are some occasions where the council is unable to take action. We will explain why and any options for taking private action on your own behalf.
