Health & Safety
at work
Are you an employer in the Guildford Borough area?
Do you work in Guildford?
If so you will need to know the standards for your workplace
Officers from Environmental Health Division are responsible for enforcing health and safety at work legislation in approximately 3,000 businesses in the service and leisure sector, such as in:
- Offices
- Retailers
- Hotels, Public Houses, Catering
- Warehouse
- Golf Clubs
- Paint Ball Games
As well as carrying out routine health and safety inspections, officers provide practical advice to employers and employees and aim to raise health and safety standards in the borough.
The frequency of inspections varies according to potential hazards and how well these are controlled.
The team also investigate accidents at work as well as complaints about safety and welfare conditions. Advice is also available to employers, employees and the public.
A visit from one of the environmental health team should be viewed as an opportunity.
All members of the commercial team are dedicated professionals and deliver a high quality service to members of the community. Officers aim to work with businesses, especially small or medium sized businesses, to advise and assist with compliance with the law.
Special initiatives based on government targets and health promotion activities. are also undertaken. In 2001 the team ran a successful campaign on slips, trips and falls in catering. The campaign was designed to raise awareness of the hazard and to identify simple low cost control measures.
A new campaign of assessing Slip Risk in the workplace started in November.
If you have an enquiry regarding health and safety at work, a complaint about your working conditions or have had a serious accident at work, or in a workplace, or require details of Health and Safety training courses you can contact the Environmental Health Division.
A wide range of free health and safety leaflets are also available from the Environmental Health Division and
the HSE website.

Enforcement Policy.
We recognise that most businesses and individuals want to comply with the law. We will actively seek to help businesses and others meet their legal obligations without unnecessary expense, while taking firm action against those who flout the law or act irresponsibly, including prosecution where appropriate.
The Council aims to use a balanced approach of advice, assistance, encouragement, and where necessary by appropriate enforcement action. Enforcement will be carried out in a fair and consistent manner in accordance with the Enforcement Concordat which Guildford Borough Council signed up to in September 2000. Included in the term ‘enforcement’ are advisory visits and assisting with compliance as well as licensing and formal enforcement action.
