Gas Monitoring

Gas monitoring at Slyfield Industrial Estate:

In 1980 Slyfield Industrial Estate was extended onto a capped landfill site which had been lying dormant since 1974. The area was monitored monthly using portable equipment and it was regularly noted that traces of methane gas were present. In order to control the problem, Engineering Services installed sampling systems in 1997, to monitor methane levels within existing buildings, with built in capacity for additional buildings as the development expanded.

After the sampling systems were installed, to regularly monitor and record the levels of methane in conjunction with Crowcon Ltd. To help with maintenance of the system, we are currently in the process of replacing the monitoring PC’s with more robust machines.

Regular manual monitoring is also performed at other Council owned landfill sites, these are: Government Road, Stonebridge and Send Hill.
