Council delivers the goods on Community Safety
Guildford Borough residents will feel more secure as two additional Police Community Support Officers start patrolling the streets in Guildford’s town and villages, providing a visible presence, reducing crime and fear of crime.
Guildford Borough Council promised to deliver two additional policing resources to tackle crime and fear of crime, and they have delivered on their promise. Veronica Smith and Sheila Willis, Guildford’s latest Police Community Support Officers (PCSO’s), started training at the beginning of January, and are now out on patrol. Veronica will cover the wards of Pirbright, Normandy and The Pilgrims, with Sheila covering Onslow and Stoughton. These additional resources mean other wards gain an increase in the patrol time of their PCSO too.
Divisional Commander Jerry Kirkby said, “Guildford Borough Council’s commitment to community safety has been significant. They have already agreed to fund seven Community Safety Wardens, and a Supervisor. The additional support of two new PCSO’s will make a considerable difference, allowing better coverage of policing resources across the Borough.”
Lead Councillor for Community Safety, John Ades said, “I am naturally delighted that Veronica and Sheila are now part of the team. Their roles are so important in providing a visible presence in their wards, helping to reduce local crime and providing reassurance in their communities. Because they can tackle things like youth nuisance, criminal damage, litter, and graffiti, many routine problems can be dealt with more quickly.”
PCSO’s cover every ward in Guildford Borough, and form part of a wider Neighbourhood Team in many areas, consisting of Neighbourhood Specialist Officers, Community Safety Wardens and Community Development Workers.
