Planning Advice

Farm diversification is an opportunity for many farmers to make better use of their resources.  Of necessity, it brings many more farmers into contact with the planning system, as they may require planning permission to convert a building or to introduce a new activity onto the farm.

"A Farmers Guide to the Planning System", recently published by DEFRA and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister explains who the planning system works.  It helps farmers to decide whether a planning application is needed and how to go about it.  It also points out the value of providing the planning authority with additional information, to cover the reasons for the application and the benefits that will flow from it.

Please call 0870 1226 236 to get a copy of "A Farmers Guide to Planning" or take a look at www.defra.gov.uk/planning-guide/index.htm

Another useful source of information for farmers intending to diversity is a booklet called "Improving your Planning Application".  This provides a format for the extra information needed by planners when they asses your application.

This booklet can be obtained from Business Link Surrey by calling 0845 7 49 49 49 or on www.businesslinksurrey.co.uk/farmprogramme.htm

It is always best to discuss your ideas with a Local Authority Planner at an early stage.  Call 01483 444620 to book an appointment or email [email protected]
